transition week 2.0
I feel like I just got the punchline. At Siena, it was always some person trumping up how good the coffee is at Starbucks. At Sbux, a woman came up to me on my first day and said, with a preface of no offense, "Have you ever had Peet's coffee? It's really good."
Joke's on me.
I don't know what I expecting. Maybe I thought things would be different somehow. That Sbux would be grand and brilliant and exceptional. Joke is, the grass is always greener on the other side.
Their dirt is just as brown.
There are rules for everything, manuals thick and spiral bound, but I constantly hear, oh that, we don't really do that.
In the end, they are just a store that is slowly deteriorating, maintaining a facade of efficency and sheen, but when you look close, crumbs, cracks, and weariness greet your probing eyes. The difference is there's more people to bitch about it, there's more people to answer the question, "Who did this?"
I can already see, a week in, that I'll either have to bite my tongue or do things the way that I know they are supposed to be done. It'll probably be like it always was at Siena, a question of how tired or how willing I was, or how much time I had.
All in all, I am glad and grateful for the newness of it, for the move, for the benefits and stuff, but I'm a little dismayed by not getting the joke; That it'd be different anywhere else.

sorry it has been so long since I posted. A long week on my feet but I am back and eager to begin this week, as long as blogger will cooperate!
Welcome back Coffee Queen! I thought maybe you took off for a vacation and didnt ask us all to come along! I was imagining you on some exotic Island, soaking up sun and cleaning sand out from between your toes. OK maybe not quite that grand, but off somewhere anyway! LOL Glad to hear you are gettin used to the new job and learning that the rule books are usually just a fancier name for a paper weight in the land of things are greener:) I was there once, in that land, I watched it from afar for alonggggggg time figuring it was all a hoax, but the more I watched the more it seemed truely greener! I am not sure what happened about time I got there someone rolled up all the astro turf and said it was needed else where!!! HAHAHH But I didn't mind I just bought a can of green spray paint and had a great old time making things the way I wanted them to be! Its all ya can so sometimes. I am sure the change of places has brought on challenges which make you rise up and conquer. Enjoy all the changes and the benefits too!!! Happy Thanksgiving!! Pass a hello from me too! Love ya!!

Stine,
I thought you of all people would have gotten the distinction that it's not the venue but who you "be" about it that makes the difference. Changing the venue doesn't change anything... you gotta transform it. That's the real joke.
It's cold up here in the artic north. Good thing I have a nice boy to keep me warm.
kisses.
Julie
